The Iliad is the older of the two Homeric poems and shows deep oral-formulaic structure throughout. Ancient attribution to Homer is consistent. The poems may reflect a bardic tradition rather than a single author. The martial register is distinct from the Odyssey's tone of wandering and cunning — this is the nature of the subject matter, not an authorship signal.
